Packing is the part of moving everyone underestimates. It always takes longer than you think, and the difference between a smooth move and a stressful one usually comes down to how the boxes were packed. Here is how we do it, from gathering supplies to wrapping the wobbly lamp your aunt swears is an antique.

Start with the right supplies

Good packing starts with good materials. Trying to save a few dollars here usually costs you a broken something later.

  • Sturdy boxes in a few sizes (small for heavy items like books, large for light bulky things).
  • Packing paper, bubble wrap, and a couple of rolls of quality tape.
  • Markers for labeling and stretch wrap for drawers and furniture.

Pack room by room and start early

Give yourself more time than feels necessary, and work one room at a time so the chaos stays contained.

  • Begin with the rooms you use least (guest room, storage, garage).
  • Finish a box completely before starting the next. Half-packed boxes multiply like rabbits.
  • Keep a running checklist so nothing gets forgotten. See our ultimate moving checklist.

Label everything clearly

Future-you, standing in a sea of identical boxes, will be grateful.

  • Mark each box with the room it belongs in and a few key contents.
  • Add “Fragile” and “This Side Up” where it matters.
  • Number your boxes and keep a quick list so you know if anything goes missing.

How to pack fragile items

Fragile packing is part art, part science. Done right, everything arrives intact.

  • Line the bottom of the box with crumpled packing paper for cushioning.
  • Wrap each item individually. Glasses and stemware get paper inside and out.
  • Stand plates on their edge like records, never stacked flat.
  • Fill every gap so nothing shifts, and never overload a box of fragiles.
  • Mark these boxes clearly and load them where they will not be crushed.

Oddly shaped and bulky items

The lamps, mirrors, bikes, and that one chair that refuses to fit anywhere.

  • Disassemble what you can and bag the hardware, taped to the item it belongs to.
  • Wrap mirrors and artwork in paper and blankets, and box them on edge.
  • For heavy equipment like a treadmill or weights, secure moving parts and lift smart. See how to move a home gym.
  • Tools and yard gear travel best cleaned, drained of fuel, and bundled. Here is how to move tools and equipment.

Special and high-value items

Some things are worth extra care (and sometimes a pro).

  • Electronics: use original boxes if you have them, and photograph the cable setup before unplugging.
  • Art and collectibles: custom protection and a “do not stack” rule.
  • Pianos are in a league of their own and are rarely a DIY job. See why piano moving is not a DIY job.

Pack an essentials box for day one

Set aside one box (or a bag) you keep with you, not on the truck.

  • A few days of clothes, toiletries, medications, chargers, and basic tools.
  • Important documents, snacks, and anything you would hate to dig for at midnight.

When to let the pros handle it

Packing is doable yourself, but it is also the first thing people happily hand off. If you are short on time, moving long distance, or just want it done right, our team packs quickly and carefully and stands behind the work. Planning a bigger move? See our long-distance moving guide too.
